Life. Politics. Religion. Humor. The mine field of opinions. Some people get so serious and agitated about some subjects that any reasonable conversation with them becomes impossible. Some people are more open, and acknowledge that not everyone has to agree with them. I want to live in peace with Democrats, Republicans, Independents, Muslims, Jews, Christians, Atheists and everyone else. You have the right to your beliefs. I have the right to mine. No offence meant.
Universal Health Care - Part II
2008-07-04
There is no good argument against UNIVERSAL health care. "Universal" is the key word here. It is not about money. It is about access. Access for everyone. The current U.S. system allows insurance companies to select who they want to insure. If you are ill, they will not take you on. Why would they? They are for-profit organizations. If you are an immigrant who just arrived, and you tell them that, they will not take you on. That happened to me. I was denied medical insurance in 2004, because I had been in the country for less than 12 months.
The cost of insurance is part of the "access" problem. Full cost of medical insurance is over $1000 for a 4 person family. For a family making around $45,000 a year, the cost of medical insurance would be over 25% of their income. People in other countries are paying about 8% of their salaries for much better coverage. When they lose their job, they do not lose their insurance.
The exclusions are another hole in the system. Even if you have insurance, not everything is covered, and I am not talking about cosmetic or elective procedures. I am talking about real life situations that may happen in your family. Alcoholism, drugs, suicide attempts. As a society, it is in our interest to care for the well-being of all us.
