I got only to the 3rd CD. The author made a mistake of killing time describing not crucial events when the two obvious life or death things that the characters should be pursuing were ignored by them. I waited, and waited, and waited. Finally, I gave up. I am not going to listen to a story in which otherwise clever characters suddenly have memory erased.
Here is that part in case you want to know the details: 4 young men and 2 women got trapped in a jungle by some locals speaking Mayan. They are stuck on a hill, the locals with crossbows and guns do not let them leave. A brother of one of the men had been killed there earlier. The hill was an archeological camp, but all that is left are 2 tents, some clothes, backpacks, sleeping bags, and a deep shaft. The situation is not good.
Suddenly our little group realizes that there is a cellphone ringing at the bottom of the shaft. It stops ringing, but then starts again. This may be their only hope to call for help. [This is the rescue option number 1] They lower one of the guys, a Greek known as Pablo who speaks only Greek. The rest of the group can speak English, Jeff can also speak Spanish and Mathias's native tongue is German. The rope breaks eaten away by the acidic sap of a vine that was growing on that rope and was not completely removed by our troop. Pablo falls down. He is crying from pain for many minutes. They send another one: Eric. [A digression] Pablo saw a snake earlier in the day, got scared, and pushed Eric who fell down and cut his arm. Noone thought of desinfecting his cut with hard liquor that Pablo had. They washed it with drinking water. I am sure it will get infected if Eric survives long enough. [End of digression]
Early during descent Eric discovers a perpendicualr shaft with rails and a strong cold draft. [This is the rescue option number 2] The rope is too short. Jeff and Mathias start pulling Eric up. Eric does not want to leave Pablo alone, and decides to jump. He lands near Pablo who starts yelling again. Eric's leg is cut and is bleeding profusely. Pablo's cries prevent the others from communicating. The shaft may be 50-100 meters deep. The team on the top starts thinking how to make a longer rope. They start cutting one of the tents into pieces. When Pablo goes quiet, they drop Eric matches to light the lamp and some medicine for him and Pablo. Eric tells them about the tunnel.
They ask Eric to check if Pablo can feel his legs. They assess that Pablo is probably paralized from waist down. They start making a stretcher to pull Pablo up and instruct Eric to extinguish the lamp to conserve oil.
See why I got impatient? Noone is mentioning the phone! Hello? Is anybody there? Where is that phone? Find it. Call the police. Ehhh. Whatever. Irritating.
